Jenn Smukler immigrated from Odessa, Ukraine, to the South Bronx at age 7. She didn't speak English. She'd never been to school. On her first day of second grade, she had no choice but to deliver, because failure was not an option, and she had already absorbed that truth before she understood the language it was spoken in. She learned fast. She always did. By college she was working nonstop. By graduation she already had a job lined up, left Boston early, skipped her own commencement to keep it, and started climbing. Leading people by 25. Managing large teams by 30. Making 10x her starting salary while her peers were 10–15 years her senior. She missed two of her daughter's birthdays before the girl turned six. She had a gorgeous blue couch nobody sat on. Her hair was falling out in clumps, and she genuinely did not register that something was wrong, because she had never known what rest felt like. When the doctor finally asked the questions nobody had asked before, Jenn learned her body was running on empty, malnourished, depleted, barely functioning. That was the moment she stopped blaming herself and started asking a different question: who designed this blueprint, and why didn't it come with a warning?

“It wasn’t the bosses. It wasn’t the clients. It was the pressure I kept putting on myself, and the belief that I had to earn my worth.”
